Tramadol Prescriptions

Changes to the law surrounding the supply of medicines which came into force on the 10th June 2014, mean that Tramadol is now what is termed as a controlled drug and prescribing therefore needs to be tightly controlled.

Tramadol is a safe and very effective painkiller when taken as prescribed by your GP or pain specialist.  However, there are increasing reports of patients coming to harm when it is misused and this is the reason the Government has upgraded its classification and brought in additional controls.

A Tramadol prescription now has a number of extra requirements that need to be undertaken by us, before the medicine can be supplied by your pharmacy. We will do our best to complete them without delaying your prescription.

There are also a number of restrictions:

  • The prescription is only valid for 28 days from the date printed on it and it must be dispensed by a pharmacy within that time.
  • The practice can only issue a maximum of 30 days’ supply on prescription.
  • Patients on Tramadol will need to have their medication reviewed every three months.

Please note that Tramadol prescriptions cannot be issued early and will not be replaced if lost.
